You’ve probably felt it before, that internal tug of war. One part of you is methodical, planning, checking off boxes. Another part is reactive, emotional, rooted in old narrative. Another part of you wants to leap, create, connect. And yet another part exists quietly beyond words, experiencing wholeness, seeing beyond your story.
These aren’t random mental states. According to neuroscientist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, they are four distinct characters inside your brain, each governed by different anatomy and wiring. When one character monopolises your internal leadership, you’ll feel imbalanced. When you invite all four to the table, you begin to lead from your full brain and your wholehearted self.
Dr. Bolte Taylor defines:
Character 1 (Left Thinking): the rational, linear, analysing self - the part that organises, labels, plans and defines boundaries.
Character 2 (Left Emotional): the part rooted in past pain, fear, reactivity - the quick “no” or “go” impulse based on comparison, survival, and ego.
Character 3 (Right Emotional): the part of you that lives in “right here, right now,” creative, inclusive, present, flowing, open to connection.
Character 4 (Right Thinking/Expansive Consciousness): the integrative, holistic part of you that transcends separation, experiences unity, gratitude, and the big-picture wisdom.
Here’s why this matters: your brain is not simply “me” doing things. It is a dynamic ecosystem of these four modules. When one dominates unchecked, you might feel stuck - caught in thought loops, emotional reactivity, ignored intuition, or disconnected purpose. But when you learn to recognise each character, to hear what they’re saying, you can begin to choose who leads in any given moment.
Inviting Each Character into Your Life
Let’s walk through what each character brings — and how you can engage them constructively today.
Character 1 — Your Left Thinking Self
This part of you organises life, sets goals, makes lists, judges what’s “good” and “bad,” “right” and “wrong.” It gives drive, structure, and execution. But when it’s in charge without balance, life can feel rigid, overly busy, disconnected from meaning.
Try this: Take five minutes tonight. Ask your Left Thinking self: “What is one structure, plan or check-in that would support my vision this week?” Then listen and jot down what comes. Let Character 1 serve your purpose rather than run your purpose.
Character 2 — Your Left Emotional Self
This part carries your past stories of fear, shame, abandonment, urgency. It reacts from “been there, done that,” pushing you into protection or sabotage. But it also holds your emotional truth.
Try this: When an emotional reaction arises today, pause and whisper to Character 2: “Thank you for warning me. I’m safe now. I’ll listen to you if you give me the message, not the panic.” You recognise its voice, but you don’t hand over the helm.
Character 3 — Your Right Emotional Self
This is the here-and-now self. It flows, creates, connects, experiences. It doesn’t live in “should” or “was” or “will.” It lives in possibility. Let it play. Let it surprise you.
Try this: Find a ten-minute activity where you’re fully present - creative, curious, playful. Maybe doodle, walk barefoot, improvise, dance, sing quietly. Let Character 3 lead for that moment.
Character 4 — Your Right Thinking or Expansive Self
This is the wise self. The self that sees beyond the story, beyond your identity. The self that says: I am part of something larger. It brings calm, purpose, meaning.
Try this: Tonight, sit quietly and reflect: “What would my life look like if I aligned with the part of me that says I’m connected to everything and everyone?” Notice your breath, your body’s response. Let Character 4 whisper its truth.
Why This Integration Matters for Mentoring, Change, and Life
In the context of coaching or mentoring, you are already reaching for transformation and change. Setting new goals, expanding your identity, opening to possibility. But change tends to stall if you only speak to one character — typically Character 1 (planning) or Character 2 (reactivity). The deeper shift happens when all four are engaged.
When your brain feels coherent and integrated, you move from reaction to choice, from old narrative to new unfolding. Dr. Bolte Taylor emphasises that when you strengthen the collaboration between these characters, you access 75% of your brain tissue that’s not triggered by survival loops.
You begin to live not just from what you do, but from who you are.
You lead with clarity, feel with authenticity, connect with presence, and rest in wisdom.
Putting the Four Characters into Practice
Here’s a daily check-in you can adopt:
1. Morning (Character 1) — Ask: What structure, intention or intention-setting will serve me today?
2. Mid-day (Character 3) — Ask: How am I showing up in the present moment? Am I connected, curious, open?
3. Evening (Character 2) — Ask: What emotion has been activated today? What part of me is still reactive? How can I meet it with compassion?
4. Night / Before bed (Character 4) — Ask: How did today reflect my larger purpose, my connected self? What truth emerged?
Over time, you’ll notice:
> fewer days dominated by panic or overload
> increasing moments of flow and presence
> emotional responses become messengers not masters
> a sense of meaning and coherence begins to underpin your actions
Understanding the Four Characters isn’t about becoming perfect. It’s about becoming whole. It’s about using the full architecture of your brain, not fighting it or ignoring parts of it. Dr. Bolte Taylor writes: “When we meet our Four Characters and bring them into diplomatic communication with one another, we gain the power to choose who and how we want to be in any moment.”
When you invite all four, you step into a more aligned, more capable version of yourself. Not because you changed mechanically, but because you reclaimed your internal team.
And when your internal world becomes more coherent, everything out there begins to reflect that.
