The Dark Night of the Soul: What It Really Is and Why It Happens

There are seasons in life where everything feels like it’s falling apart from the inside out. You wake up and feel a heaviness you can’t explain. The things that used to give you joy feel distant. Your direction feels foggy and the person you thought you were no longer fits. The life you built suddenly feels too small, too tight, too misaligned - like you’ve outgrown yourself but don’t know who you’re becoming.

It’s not depression. It’s not burnout. It’s not “something wrong with you.”

It’s something far deeper — a dismantling of an identity you can no longer inhabit.

This is what many spiritual traditions call the dark night of the soul.

The term is old — popularised by 16th-century mystic St. John of the Cross — but the experience is timeless. It is a period of profound inner unraveling, where the beliefs, patterns, coping mechanisms, and versions of yourself that once carried you suddenly stop working. You don’t choose it. It chooses you. Not as punishment, but as initiation.

Psychologist Carl Jung wrote, “There is no coming to consciousness without pain.” Not because suffering is required, but because spiritual awakening requires shedding parts of you that once kept you safe.

Spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle describes the dark night as a collapse of meaning - the moment when your old identity dissolves and something truer begins to emerge.

But the emergence doesn’t happen immediately. The void comes first. The confusion. The sense of “who am I without my old patterns?” The emptiness that feels like the ground has disappeared beneath you.

It’s confronting.
It’s destabilising.
And it’s real.

Not woo woo. Not imagination. Not exaggeration.

In fact, modern psychology recognises these periods as ego dissolution, identity restructuring, and post-traumatic growth phases - moments when the psyche breaks down old adaptive patterns to make room for healthier, more integrated ones. It's the same process described in trauma recovery, somatic healing, and transformative coaching.

Spiritual traditions call it the death of the false self.
Psychology calls it integration.
Your body calls it evolution.

During a dark night of the soul, you may notice:

> a sudden lack of direction
> a disconnect from things that once felt meaningful
> emotional intensity and internal chaos
> questions that feel existential
> feeling separate from your old life, but not yet attached to your new one
> a sensation of “quiet collapse” inside
> a deep longing for truth, purpose, and alignment

You might even ask yourself, Is this normal? Is this real? Am I losing myself? And yet, spiritually speaking, you’re not losing yourself — you’re losing who you are not.

The dark night strips away everything that isn’t aligned with your core self.
The people-pleasing.
The masks.
The over-functioning.
The survival strategies.
The conditioning.
The patterns you inherited but never chose.
The parts of you, that you built out of fear instead of truth.

What remains in the ashes is the raw, honest foundation of who you really are.

But that foundation feels foreign at first. It feels quiet, empty and undefined. Your intuition grows quieter before it gets louder. Your emotions soften before they clarify. Your path looks darker before it illuminates. This is why the dark night is often misunderstood - because you feel like you’re going backwards, when in reality, you’re going deeper.

Spiritual author Thomas Moore explains it beautifully: “When the soul wants to experience something, she throws out an image in front of her and then steps into it.” Sometimes the image she throws is a letting go. Sometimes it’s a breakdown. Sometimes it’s a silence so deep it forces you inward.

But there is always movement. Even when you feel still.

There is always growth. Even when you feel lost.
There is always light forming. Even when you can’t see it yet.

The dark night of the soul doesn’t end with a sudden epiphany, it ends with subtle, gentle shifts:

> a growing sense of inner strength
> moments of unexpected clarity
> deeper intuition
> more presence
> emotional steadiness
> awareness of what truly matters
> a feeling of being more “you” than ever before

And one day, without noticing the moment it happened, you realise:

You’re no longer breaking — you’re becoming.

If you’re in the dark night, or feel like you’re approaching one, know this: nothing is wrong with you. You’re not failing, weak or broken. You’re shedding. And you don’t have to move through it alone.

Coaching and mentoring can be a powerful companion in periods like this — not to rush your transformation, not to “fix” you, but to walk beside you while you reintroduce yourself to yourself. Mentoring becomes the safe space where your confusion is honoured, your fears are understood, and your identity can rebuild in alignment with your truth, not your past.

In this space, you find clarity. You find language for what you’re experiencing and direction without pressure. You find the courage to move through the dark without abandoning yourself. You create your own path.

So, ask yourself gently…
Do you believe this might be happening for you?

Is this something you’ve dismissed as “too spiritual,” “too dramatic,” or “not real”?

Or have you secretly felt it in your bones, but never had the language to name it?

Because once you name it — the light begins to find you.

And from that moment, you’re no longer lost.

You're transforming.
